Wizard Who Champions the Little Guy,

How does a small shop outrank the big chains on Google?

— an owner of a tech refurbishing shop in SE Portland, adapted from a question on r/smallbusiness

Asked

I've done the basics: optimized my Google profile, added citations, built some backlinks. My prices are better and I carry things the chains don't, but I still can't outrank them. Word of mouth keeps us going, slowly.

The Wizard answers

Don’t fight them head on. You’ll lose the broad searches, like “laptop store,” for a long time. Chains have years of links, brand searches, and budget. That’s fine. You don’t need those searches.

Win the specific ones instead.

You said you carry products the chains don’t. That’s your opening. Someone searching “refurbished ThinkPad near me” or “imported Japanese keyboard” is a better customer than someone searching “electronics store,” and the chains have nothing to show them.

  • Build a page for each thing you’re known for. A page for refurbished ThinkPads. A page for the imports. A page for repairs. Specific titles, real photos, prices if you can.
  • Add products to your Google Business Profile. Most chains’ local listings are thin. Yours doesn’t have to be.
  • Get reviews that mention what people bought. “Got a refurbished MacBook for half the price” works as a little keyword for you.
  • Earn local links. Sponsor something, get featured in a local blog, partner with a nearby repair shop or school. One real local link beats a pile of directory listings.

Word of mouth keeping you going is a good sign. It means people like what you sell. The job now is to make sure that when someone searches for the exact thing you’re great at, you’re the one who shows up.
