Most Illuminated Oracle of the Search Results,

Customers review us in our booking app but won't touch Google. Why?

— an owner of an appointment-based business in NE Portland, adapted from a question on r/smallbusiness

Asked

Our booking system's review email gets us up to 10 reviews a day, but none of them show up in search. When I switched the link to a Google review link, responses dropped to zero. I think it's the Google login.

The Wizard answers

You found the real problem. Leaving a Google review means being signed in to Google, and every extra step loses people. A tap that opens a login screen loses almost everyone.

A few things help:

  • Use the direct review link. In your Google Business Profile, choose “Ask for reviews” and copy that link. It opens the review box itself, not your listing.
  • Text it instead of emailing it. Most phones are already signed in to Google, especially Android phones and anyone using Gmail. A text opens on the phone. An email often opens on a work laptop where nobody’s signed in.
  • Ask in person, at the high point. Right after the appointment, while they’re happy. Hand them a card or show a QR code. “It helps us a ton” is enough.
  • Keep your booking app reviews too. They’re still useful on your website and in the app.

Don’t stop collecting reviews in your own system because Google is harder. Just make Google the easiest it can be for the people who are willing.

And one rule to know: you can’t send only your happy customers to Google and your unhappy ones somewhere else. Google calls that review gating, and it can cost you your reviews. Ask everyone the same way.
